Attack in Manipurs Noney District Claims One Life

Imphal, May 14: A tragic incident unfolded in Noney district, Manipur, on Wednesday evening when a couple was ambushed while returning home from Imphal. This attack occurred just hours after another incident in Kangpokpi district.

According to a police officer, the couple, belonging to the Chiru Naga community, was traveling by car when unidentified armed assailants opened fire on their vehicle near the Jojangtek area of the Khoupum police station.

Wilson Thanga, a resident of Dolang Chiru village, lost his life in the attack, while his wife sustained serious injuries.

Sources indicate that the couple had previously sought refuge in the Nungsai Khunthak area of Khoupum police station in Noney district.

This recent attack has raised further concerns about the security situation in Manipur’s hilly districts, especially following a similar incident in Kangpokpi earlier that day.

Security forces arrived at the scene promptly after receiving reports of the attack. However, there has been no official statement regarding the identity of the assailants or the circumstances surrounding the incident. An investigation is ongoing.

A police officer from Imphal reported that earlier on Wednesday, unknown armed individuals ambushed two vehicles on Tiger Road in the hilly region of Kangpokpi district. This attack resulted in the deaths of three individuals at the scene, while four others were injured.

All deceased were from the Kuki community and were traveling in the vehicles when the armed attackers opened fire.

The Kuki Students Organization stated that all the deceased were leaders associated with the Kuki community’s Baptist Church. In response to the killings of three Baptist church leaders in Kangpokpi district, the Kuki Inpi Manipur, one of the major organizations of the Kuki community, has called for a complete shutdown in all Kuki-majority areas of the state for three days.

Janghaolun Haokip, the information and publicity secretary of Kuki Inpi Manipur, condemned the killings, describing the attack as barbaric, which also left five others injured.
