Guwahati, May 10: The formation of a new government in Assam is now clear. The Chief Minister’s office announced on Sunday via social media that Himanta Biswa Sarma has been appointed as the Chief Minister under Article 164(1) of the Constitution.
The official post from the Assam Chief Minister’s office stated, “The Governor of Assam has appointed Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister under Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India. The oath-taking ceremony will be held on May 12, 2026, at 11:40 AM in Khanapara, Guwahati.” Prior to this, Dr. Sarma claimed to form the next government.
The official order issued by the Governor also confirmed that Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been appointed as Chief Minister using the powers granted under Article 164(1) of the Indian Constitution. The order specified that the oath-taking ceremony will take place on May 12 at 11:40 AM at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously chosen as the leader during a meeting of the BJP legislative party and the NDA legislative party.
To complete the process of forming the new government, the BJP assigned special responsibilities from its central leadership. Central Minister JP Nadda was appointed as the observer, while Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was designated as the co-observer. Both leaders played a crucial role in the legislative party meeting and the government formation process in Assam.
