Guwahati, August 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state government is undertaking a significant initiative to replace over 1,000 wooden and dilapidated bridges with durable Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) bridges, ensuring safety in all weather conditions.
The program aims to strengthen road connectivity across the state and enhance access to government services and welfare schemes for the populace.
Sarma stated, “We are transforming more than 1,000 wooden and dilapidated bridges into safe RCC structures throughout Assam. This will improve connectivity and expedite access to welfare programs for the people.”
On Friday, the Chief Minister inaugurated a newly constructed bridge in his assembly constituency, emphasizing that it would provide substantial relief to thousands of daily commuters.
Old and weak bridges often disrupt transportation, especially during the monsoon season. The construction of RCC bridges is expected to facilitate safer and smoother transit for ambulances, school vehicles, public transport, and commercial vehicles.
Sarma noted that improved connectivity would enhance access to health, education, and other essential government services for residents in remote and rural areas.
This initiative is part of the state government’s broader infrastructure development campaign. Assam frequently faces damage to transportation infrastructure due to heavy rainfall, flooding, and river erosion. Therefore, the effort to replace dilapidated bridges is considered crucial.
The state government will prioritize this program by focusing on old, damaged bridges located on vital transportation routes, advancing the initiative in various regions.
