Guwahati, May 10: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA is set to advance the process of forming the next government in Assam. A meeting with Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya is expected on Sunday, as they have requested an appointment and claimed to form the government.
Assam’s caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Sarma stated on Friday that following the election of a BJP leader, confirmation from the AGP and BPF will follow. The new leader will then meet with the Governor to present their claim to form the government. Sarma also mentioned that the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for May 12 at 11 AM, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He submitted his resignation to the Governor on Wednesday, who requested him to continue as the head of the caretaker government.
Preparations are in full swing for the NDA’s swearing-in for the third consecutive time in Assam. BJP leader Bhupen Kumar Bora expressed optimism, stating, “Today, the hopes and expectations of the people of Assam will be fulfilled. Therefore, we are fully in support of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and I am confident that the BJP leadership will listen to the voice of the people of Assam.”
Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary explained, “The rule is that once the assembly is formed, the elected members must choose their leader, who will then take the oath as Chief Minister. Today, all NDA legislators will gather, choose their leader, and then approach the Governor. The Governor will administer the oath, after which the Chief Minister will form their team.”
Assam BJP state president Dilip Saikia confirmed that they will meet with the Governor by noon to present their claim to form the government. It is noteworthy that the new government in Assam is expected to be sworn in on May 12, with Himanta Biswa Sarma set to take the oath as Chief Minister for the second time. He had resigned on May 6 and is currently serving as the caretaker CM. The BJP legislative party meeting took place on May 10, where consensus was reached on Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s return as Chief Minister.
