Guwahati, April 10: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Thursday that the ongoing assembly elections in Assam have evolved into a “people’s movement” aimed at safeguarding the state’s identity, culture, and land.
In a post on the social media platform X, he emphasized that this electoral process is not merely a traditional political contest. Instead, he described it as a collective resolve of the people to oppose illegal immigration and demographic invasion.
Sarma noted, “Our mission was not just to contest elections but to transform it into a movement.” He further stated that voters have turned out in “unprecedented numbers,” with some polling booths reporting turnout rates exceeding 95%.
According to official figures, by 5 PM, voter turnout in Assam reached 84.42%, reflecting significant public participation across all constituencies. The voting process remained largely peaceful, with long queues observed outside polling stations from the morning.
The Chief Minister remarked that the high voter turnout indicates that people are voting with a unified purpose, transcending caste and language barriers to protect the state’s identity. He described this as no ordinary occurrence, calling it historic and a decisive turning point in Assam’s political history.
Sarma also claimed that even before the counting of votes began, the visible “hope, pride, and joy” among voters suggested a clear outcome for the elections. With confidence, he asserted that the voters’ message is “absolutely clear.” He declared, “Assam will not give up, Assam will fight, Assam will survive, Assam will endure.”
