Guwahati, May 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Monday that comments made by Congress leader Pawan Khera about his family have stirred public sentiment. This backlash was evident in the Indian National Congress’s defeat during the recent assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a remarkable victory.
Speaking to reporters after the BJP’s success in the Assam assembly elections, Sarma referred to Khera’s alleged remarks against his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. He noted that these comments emotionally resonated with the people of the state.
Sarma suggested that such personal attacks during the campaign significantly impacted public opinion and the election results. He emphasized that while political competition is natural in a democracy, dragging family members into political disputes is unacceptable to the public.
He remarked that these comments hurt the sentiments of the people, who responded in their own way. Voters showed strong support for the BJP, as he claimed that Congress’s campaign strategy failed to influence the electorate.
According to Sarma, the election outcome reflects a rejection of what he termed “negative politics.” He also indicated that the issue became a topic of discussion during the campaign, with many voters expressing disagreement with Khera’s comments.
This controversy, he added, contributed to strengthening the BJP’s support in various assembly constituencies. Recently, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case filed by Riniki Sarma at the Guwahati Crime Branch police station.
