
Guwahati, May 8: Assam has made a significant mark on the national stage by winning three prestigious awards under the National Panchayat Awards 2025. Officials announced this achievement on Friday, highlighting the state’s commitment to grassroots governance and rural development under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to officials, Assam received awards in various categories established by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The state won the ‘Nanaji Deshmukh Best Panchayat Sustainable Development Award 2025,’ which comes with a cash prize of ₹1.5 crore.
In this category, the ‘New Nopam Village Panchayat’ in Sonitpur district was recognized as the best village panchayat for its performance in local governance, implementation of welfare schemes, and sustainable development initiatives.
Officials noted that this award acknowledges the panchayat’s efforts to enhance local infrastructure, sanitation, community participation, and livelihood opportunities in rural areas.
Assam also received the ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sustainable Development Award 2025’ in the “Clean and Green Panchayat” category, which includes a cash prize of ₹75 lakh. The ‘Jummuramur Village Panchayat’ in Nagaon district earned this recognition for its initiatives related to sanitation campaigns, waste management, environmental conservation, and green development measures.
Another notable achievement came from the ‘Hugrijan Village Panchayat’ in Dibrugarh district, which was honored in the “Self-Reliant Infrastructure” category. This award was given for developing sustainable rural infrastructure and strengthening local economic activities through community participation and development-oriented planning.
Officials stated that these awards are presented annually to recognize exemplary performances by panchayats across the country in achieving sustainable development goals through effective local governance.
They emphasized that this year’s awards showcase Assam’s ongoing efforts towards decentralized administration, rural empowerment, and inclusive development.
In recent years, the state government has focused on strengthening gram panchayats through improved financial assistance, digital governance, sanitation initiatives, and infrastructure development in rural areas.
Officials further mentioned that this national recognition will encourage local governing bodies in Assam to adopt innovative and people-centric development practices.
