New Delhi, February 21: The recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding tariffs has sparked reactions from opposition leaders in India. Ashok Mittal, a member of the Rajya Sabha from the Aam Aadmi Party, described the decision as significant and provided detailed insights.

He noted that on August 27, 2025, the U.S. raised the tariff rate from 25% to 50%. Prior to this, it had been reduced to 18% under the India-U.S. interim trade agreement. The U.S. Supreme Court has now deemed Trump’s tariff campaign illegal, stating that it violated provisions of a 1970 law that governs such actions.

Mittal welcomed the ruling and expressed gratitude to the U.S. Supreme Court. He mentioned that the court delivered its decision with a 6-3 majority, which included two justices appointed by Trump himself. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the tariff is expected to decrease to 10%, which is seen as a positive development.

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha urged the government to provide clear information on the matter. Typically, ministers in the Rajya Sabha offer clarifications and answer questions after making statements, but this tradition was not upheld this time. Such silence increases uncertainty, and it is essential to address all concerns.

In Patna, RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari remarked that while the U.S. Supreme Court has declared the tariff illegal, Trump appears unwilling to accept this ruling.

Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput commented, “What the U.S. Supreme Court has done, or what the U.S. does, is their business. We need to see whether the 18% tariff imposed on us provides relief to our traders. Today, those from the BJP celebrating the U.S. court’s decision should at least consider how independent the judicial system is there, as opposed to India, where Rahul Gandhi receives a two-year sentence in a defamation case from a Gujarat court. This is shameful.”
