New Delhi, May 20: Arshad Madani, the president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, has demanded that the cow be declared the ‘national animal’ of India. He emphasized that the majority of the country’s population not only regards the cow as sacred but also holds it in maternal esteem. It is perplexing, he stated, why the government has refrained from making this declaration due to political pressures.
In a post on the social media platform X, Madani wrote, “The cow should be designated as the ‘national animal.’ The majority of our population sees the cow as not just sacred but as a mother. It is beyond comprehension what political compulsion is preventing the government from granting this status. The mob lynching in the name of the cow, the killing of innocent people, the politics of hate, and the defamation of Muslims must end. We would welcome the declaration of the cow as the ‘national animal’ as a permanent solution to this issue, ensuring that no lives are lost and that politics is not played in the name of religion.”
He pointed out the irony that in some states, beef is sold openly without any protests or incidents of mob lynching, while in areas with significant Muslim populations, violence occurs in the name of the cow. This is not a matter of reverence but rather a double standard and a political game. Regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he noted that while it is argued that the country should have a single law, the laws related to animal slaughter are not uniformly applied across states.
Madani further highlighted that there are many states where beef is consumed openly without restrictions. He mentioned that even a central minister has publicly acknowledged consuming beef. It is particularly surprising that this occurs in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Even more astonishing is the silence of those who commit mob violence in the name of the cow.
He reiterated the desire to resolve this controversy permanently by declaring the cow as the ‘national animal.’ Any laws enacted should be applied equally across all states without discrimination, as justice demands fairness.
