Arrest Warrant Issued for Former PM Deuba and Wife in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, April 8: The Kathmandu District Court has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, former Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba. This action is linked to an investigation into illegal financial transactions.

According to a report from the Kathmandu Post, the warrant was issued on Tuesday at the request of the Money Laundering Investigation Department, led by Judge Mahendra Khadka.

The investigation department is also probing former Prime Ministers KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal for money laundering allegations.

During the Jan-Gi movement last September, videos and images of burnt cash from the residences of Deuba, Dahal’s daughter, and former Energy Minister Deepak Khadka circulated widely on social media. Khadka has since been in police custody for questioning.

Protesters had set fire to their homes. Forensic investigations later confirmed that the currency notes were genuine, prompting a thorough investigation amid suspicions that the images might have been generated using artificial intelligence.

However, Deuba and his wife are currently abroad. They traveled to Singapore for medical treatment on February 26 and have reportedly not returned, with sources indicating they may be in Hong Kong.

Sources told the Kathmandu Post that the arrest warrant was issued to initiate the process for an Interpol Red Notice. Once the Red Notice is issued, they can be detained abroad, facilitating their return to Nepal.

Sher Bahadur Deuba has served as Nepal’s Prime Minister five times and has been a significant figure in Nepalese politics since 1991. He has consistently won elections from his home district of Dadeldhura but did not participate in the elections held on March 5 this year.
