Army Safely Dismantles Live Mortar Shell Near LOC in Poonch

Jammu, August 21: The Indian Army safely destroyed a live mortar shell found near the Line of Control (LOC) in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday.

Officials reported that the shell was discovered in the Mankot sector of Poonch and was neutralized without incident. The Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) conducted a controlled disposal operation in the Dabaraj area, ensuring no injuries or property damage occurred during the process.

Residents and farmers in areas near the LOC often encounter unexploded live mortar shells. These shells can surface during farming activities or due to heavy rainfall, remnants of previous cross-border shelling.

The Army’s BDS routinely neutralizes these hazardous remnants in a safe and controlled manner. Authorities advise the public not to touch, move, kick, or pick up unexploded shells. They are urged to maintain a safe distance and alert others to do the same. Immediate notification to the nearest Army camp or local police station is essential for safe disposal by the BDS.

Landmines also pose a significant threat to both civilians and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. The Army employs landmines as a strategic security measure to prevent illegal infiltration from across the border.

Heavily monitored minefields exist in areas such as Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla (Uri), and Akhnoor. However, heavy rains and seasonal flooding can displace landmines from their designated locations, causing them to wash into nearby slopes or fields.

During the summer and autumn months, forest fires near the zero line can trigger the detonation of exposed or displaced mines, posing further risks to safety.
