Navi Mumbai, March 1: A grand event commemorating the 350th martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur was held in Navi Mumbai under the banner of ‘Hind Di Chadar.’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering virtually, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the event in person and spoke directly to the audience.
In his message, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Guru Tegh Bahadur’s unparalleled sacrifice, stating that the Guru dedicated everything to protect humanity, religious freedom, and faith. He emphasized that India’s history is one of valor, coordination, and cooperation. Whenever the Gurus displayed ultimate sacrifice, the citizens drew inspiration from it. He remarked that in today’s time, when social unity is most needed, such events reassure us that the blessings of our Gurus are always with us. This occasion has helped disseminate the heroic and inspirational history of the Gurus to the masses.
Modi also mentioned that the central government is celebrating significant festivals related to the Guru Sahib. He highlighted the initiation of Veer Bal Diwas in honor of the Sahibzadas and the rapid completion of the Kartarpur Corridor. Additionally, several important decisions have been made to provide relief to Sikh organizations under the FCRA.
The Prime Minister further stated that his government has reopened cases related to the 1984 riots, formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), announced additional compensation for riot victims, and taken action against the perpetrators. He noted that the path has been cleared for Afghan Sikhs to obtain Indian citizenship, and thousands of Sikhs previously blacklisted have been removed from the list.
He affirmed that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the faith and dignity of the Sikh community. He added that the spirit of standing with courage and truth is as relevant today as it was during the time of the Guru Sahib. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice serves as an inspiration not only for the Sikh community but for the entire nation and society.
Amit Shah, in his address, stated that Prime Minister Modi has left no opportunity to honor and serve Sikh Gurus at the national level. He mentioned that devotees from across the country gathered to pay homage to the sacrifice made by the Guru 350 years ago.
Shah emphasized that if Guru Tegh Bahadur had not made the ultimate sacrifice to protect religion, Hinduism and Sikhism would not be safe today. He noted that the Gurus united society against the tyranny of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, safeguarding culture and religion.
The Home Minister expressed concern over recent reports of religious conversions in Punjab, deeming them inappropriate. He stated that such actions disrespect the teachings and sacrifices of the Sikh Gurus and must be halted.
In conclusion, Amit Shah reiterated that the sacrifice and message of the Gurus remain as relevant today, urging the nation to draw inspiration from their teachings to uphold social unity and cultural values.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also addressed the event, stating that Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the faith of Hindus and the Sanatan Dharma. He emphasized that due to the Guru’s sacrifice, citizens today can preserve their religious beliefs and traditions.
Fadnavis highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice among the public, especially the Hindu community, to help them understand how the Guru’s sacrifice strengthened society. He clarified that Guru Tegh Bahadur’s legacy will not be confined to the Sikh community but will be shared across all sections of society in the state.
He recounted that during the tyranny of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, when atrocities and forced conversions against Hindus began, people remembered Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. In those difficult times, the Guru assured them of protection. He detailed the inhumane atrocities inflicted on the Guru by Aurangzeb, who tortured him, yet Guru Tegh Bahadur refused to renounce his faith and was ultimately martyred.
