Amaravati: A Testament to Faith and Sacrifice, Says Ram Mohan Naidu

New Delhi, April 2: Amaravati is being developed as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Union Minister for Civil Aviation, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, emphasized that this is not merely a story about creating a capital; it embodies the faith, sacrifices, and dreams of the people for a better future. On Thursday, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2026 was presented in the Rajya Sabha. Ram Mohan Naidu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak on this historic occasion.

He stated, “This day is filled with pride and emotion, not just for me or the 50 million people of Andhra Pradesh, but for the entire Telugu community living both in India and abroad. It is an emotional moment for me. This issue transcends merely deciding a state capital; it reflects the faith and pride of our democracy, leadership, and political system. Its impact is profound.”

Naidu noted, “Historically, Andhra Pradesh has been one of the most prosperous and progressive states. However, when the state was bifurcated in 2014, it was unprecedented that a new state was formed without a capital. This is where the problems began. We were not against the bifurcation, but the manner in which it occurred was flawed. Other new states have been created in the country without such issues. Andhra Pradesh was left with a revenue deficit of ₹16,000 crores without a capital, leaving the people uncertain about their future.”

The Union Minister remarked that during such challenging times, the hopes of the people rested on a leader: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He inspired confidence and a new vision among the populace, believing that every crisis brings an opportunity. “I entered politics at a young age and have been in Parliament for the last ten years. During this time, I understood every aspect of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act and raised it on every platform. Therefore, it is a matter of pride for me that the efforts of the people of Andhra Pradesh, especially the farmers and women of Amaravati, are being recognized today.”

He explained that when it came to selecting the capital, Amaravati was chosen democratically with the consensus of all parties. This decision was made in the Assembly in 2024. Amaravati is located along the Krishna River, making it an ideal site. Many great civilizations have developed along rivers, and with this vision, a world-class capital was envisioned. Amaravati has a rich history, having been a significant center during the Satavahana period nearly 2000 years ago and an important site for Buddhism. Its central location made it a unanimous choice. The Prime Minister himself laid the foundation stone during the auspicious occasion of Dussehra.

He added that the entire nation supported this project, and construction began. However, after the state government changed in 2019, the situation shifted dramatically. The period from 2019 to 2024 was very challenging for Andhra Pradesh. Development stalled, and the state regressed. Attempts were made to dismantle Amaravati, creating confusion with the proposal of three capitals, which aimed to incite conflict among different regions of the state. Ultimately, this proposal had to be withdrawn after judicial scrutiny, and in 2022, the High Court reaffirmed that Amaravati would remain the capital. The most crucial role in this entire matter was played by the farmers and women of Amaravati. When land was needed for the capital, farmers voluntarily donated thousands of acres. This is a significant and inspiring contribution.
