Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes Election Commission Amid Protests by Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi police on October 6 while protesting the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Their detention sparked criticism from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who urged the Election Commission not to act under BJP’s influence. “We are all protesting against the Election Commission,” he stated.

Yadav questioned the need for the BJP to establish numerous offices, suggesting they could simply operate from a single floor of the Election Commission building. He accused the BJP of wanting to eliminate votes from citizens who do not support them, claiming, “The opposition demands Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The BJP should not defend itself against our movement; they are trying to steal votes through the Commission.”

Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding expressed concerns over the misuse of public assets, stating, “Is All India Radio a private property? It belongs to the people.” He criticized the current state of democracy, alleging that votes are being manipulated under the guise of the Special Identification Register (SIR).

Kalyan Banerjee, a leader from the Mamata faction, emphasized that the opposition coalition has united against the SIR, demanding Kumar’s resignation due to unconstitutional actions leading to the BJP’s electoral victories.

Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman noted that discontent over Kumar’s leadership is widespread, extending beyond the India Bloc alliance. He highlighted that even individuals outside political parties are voicing their opposition. “Complaints have come from within the Commission itself, with objections being ignored,” he remarked.

Congress leader Uday Bhanu accused the Delhi police of protecting those undermining democracy, stating that peaceful protesters were being forcibly removed. Praveen Chakravarty, another Congress leader, declared the day significant for Indian democracy, asserting that Rahul Gandhi is fighting for the voting rights of every young citizen.

This protest reflects growing tensions between the opposition and the ruling party, raising questions about the integrity of the electoral process in India.
