
Ahmedabad, February 9: South African captain Aiden Markram delivered an impressive performance on Monday, scoring a half-century against Canada in the ninth match of the T20 World Cup 2026. With this achievement, Markram has now tied for the second-most half-centuries by a South African player in T20 World Cup history.
Leading the list is AB de Villiers, who has five half-centuries, while both Markram and Quinton de Kock have reached four each.
In this match, Markram partnered with Quinton de Kock to put together a 66-run partnership in just six overs. This marks South Africa’s second-highest score during the powerplay in T20 World Cup history. Previously, South Africa scored 66 runs for the loss of one wicket against Afghanistan in the 2016 T20 World Cup.
The highest powerplay score for South Africa in T20 World Cup history remains 83 runs against England in 2016.
Batting first after losing the toss, the South African team amassed 213 runs for the loss of four wickets. Markram and de Kock shared a 70-run partnership in 6.5 overs. De Kock scored 25 runs off 22 balls, hitting two fours before being dismissed. Following this, Ryan Rickelton joined Markram for a second-wicket partnership, adding 56 runs in 28 balls. Markram contributed 59 runs, while Rickelton scored 33 runs.
At one point, South Africa had lost four wickets for just 138 runs. However, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller then added 75 runs in 37 balls, pushing the team past the 200-run mark. Miller remained unbeaten on 39 runs from 23 balls, hitting three sixes and one four, while Stubbs scored an unbeaten 34 runs off 19 balls, including four boundaries.
From the opposing team, Ansh Patel took the most wickets, claiming three, while captain Dilpreet Bajwa managed to secure one wicket.
