Ahmedabad, May 2: The special NDPS court in Ahmedabad has sentenced a man from Rajasthan to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for the interstate trafficking of 185 grams of 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MEC), a substance commonly referred to as a ‘designer drug.’
According to an NCB official, the court found Dashrath Singh, a resident of Pratapgarh in Rajasthan, guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985 and imposed a fine of ₹200,000.
The NCB reported that Singh was arrested on January 30, 2023, based on reliable intelligence. He was apprehended while driving a bus from Mandsaur to Ahmedabad at the Bordy Mill Compound parking area near Hirabhai Market on Kankaria Road.
During the search, authorities seized 185 grams of 4-MEC from Singh, who was formally arrested the same day. Following the completion of the investigation, the NCB filed a chargesheet on July 25, 2023, in the Ahmedabad City Civil and Sessions Court under sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985.
4-MEC is a synthetic stimulant categorized among new psychoactive substances (cathinone derivatives) and is often abused for its amphetamine-like stimulating and euphoric effects. However, the NCB warns that its use can lead to severe side effects, including anxiety, restlessness, increased heart rate, hypertension, and a risk of addiction.
Due to its high potential for abuse and harmful health effects, 4-MEC is considered a dangerous psychoactive substance. The NCB stated that the thorough investigation and diligent prosecution by its Ahmedabad zonal unit ensured justice and aimed to protect communities from the devastating consequences of substance abuse.
