New Delhi, August 12: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially approved the dates for the proposed three-match T20 series against Afghanistan. This marks the first time Afghanistan will host the Indian team for a T20 series on Indian soil.
The matches are scheduled to take place on September 13, 15, and 17 at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi.
BCCI President Mithun Manhas expressed, “The BCCI is committed to supporting the growth of cricket in Afghanistan and providing its players with opportunities to compete at the highest level. Bilateral series are an essential part of cricket, allowing teams to regularly play against strong opponents and gain valuable experience. We welcome the Afghanistan Cricket Board to India for this series and look forward to collaborating with them to ensure its success. We believe there is much more we can achieve together. We will continue to support Afghan cricket while strengthening the relationship between our two cricketing nations.”
BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia added, “We are pleased to collaborate with the Afghanistan Cricket Board to host this T20 series in India. The cricket rivalry between India and Afghanistan has seen some thrilling matches in recent years. Both teams boast talented players, and Afghan cricketers are quite popular among fans in India. This reflects the strong ties between our two cricketing nations. Hosting Afghanistan for their historic first Test in 2018 was another significant milestone in this journey. We look forward to regular bilateral matches between our teams.”
He further stated, “We recently hosted Afghanistan for a Test and ODI series in June. This T20 series means that both teams will now compete against each other in all three formats. We are excited to welcome the Afghanistan team to Delhi and are confident that it will be an exciting and memorable series.”
Afghanistan Cricket Board President Mirwais Ashraf remarked, “This series holds great significance for Afghan cricket. It is another important step in the development of our long-standing relationship with the BCCI. Hosting a bilateral series in India is a major achievement for us, and we greatly value the BCCI’s support in making this event possible.”
He added, “In recent years, we have held matches in both India and the UAE. Given the importance and scale of this series, we believe India is an excellent venue for this event. We are confident that this series will create valuable opportunities commercially, technically, and in cricket. It will add a new dimension to our bilateral engagement. We look forward to a successful series and strengthening our partnership with the BCCI.”
