New Delhi, March 10: The ODI Cup final between Tasmania and New South Wales is set for March 11. Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha will retain his spot in the playing eleven as Adam Zampa has decided not to play against Tasmania. Sangha currently leads the tournament with 18 wickets from seven matches.
This season has been different for Zampa. After Australia’s early exit from the T20 World Cup, the final’s schedule clashed with a series against the Indian women’s team. Zampa was among the white-ball players available for both teams. He wanted to play but opted out when it became clear that Hobart’s conditions would not favor two leg-spinners.
Zampa has played only one match for New South Wales this season, where he partnered with Sangha in bowling. Sangha has taken 18 wickets at an average of 18.05 in 11 international matches.
Greg Mail, Chief Performance Officer of New South Wales, told ESPNcricinfo, “Initially, Adam was available and eager to play. We discussed how his availability might affect Tanveer’s participation. He clearly stated that since Tanveer is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament and is still improving his bowling, he did not want his selection to hinder Tanveer’s opportunity to play. We agreed on that.”
He added, “The question arose whether a day-night match at Bellerive was the right time to field two leg-spinners. We have played them together in some matches over the years. When we decided it wasn’t suitable, Zampa voluntarily stepped back to ensure Tanveer could play.”
The New South Wales team includes: Curtis Patterson (captain), Sean Abbott, Joel Davis, Ben Dwarshius, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadley, Liam Hatcher, Sam Constas, Josh Philippe, William Salter, Lachlan Shaw, and Tanveer Sangha.
