Amritsar, August 22: Indian T20 opener Abhishek Sharma is leading the Amritsar Surmaaz in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League. He expressed that captaining his hometown team is a significant honor. “I am excited to lead Amritsar Surmaaz and to nurture the next generation of cricketers in Punjab,” he stated.
Sharma remarked, “Captaining this team is not only an honor but also an emotional responsibility. Punjab has given me everything in my cricket journey. Now, leading a franchise in my home state’s T20 league is a proud moment for me.”
He emphasized his approach to the game, saying, “My mindset has always been to put pressure on the opposition from the first ball. I want this mentality to reflect in the entire playing eleven. We should not play with the fear of failure in batting, bowling, or fielding.”
Sharma views this league as a significant opportunity for Punjab’s emerging cricketers, as it allows them to experience competitive cricket in a professional franchise environment broadcasted on television.
“This is a game-changer for Punjab cricket. There is immense young talent across different districts in the state, which often goes unrecognized in national domestic tournaments. A competitive league broadcasted on television bridges this gap,” he explained.
He aims to teach young players the importance of confidence, match awareness, and making the right decisions under pressure.
The explosive left-handed batsman added, “Winning the trophy would certainly be special, but true success will come when three or four young players from our team gain enough confidence and recognition to secure IPL contracts and opportunities in the state team. If I can inspire the next generation of Amritsar while achieving success with the team, that will be my greatest reward.”
