Amritsar, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : Abhishek Sharma, a standout player for Team India, has made a name for himself as one of the world’s most explosive openers. At just 25 years old, he has already achieved significant milestones in international cricket.
Born on September 4, 2000, in Amritsar, Punjab, Abhishek grew up in a household filled with cricketing aspirations. His father, Rajkumar Sharma, had dreams of becoming a cricketer himself, which led to an early exposure to the sport for Abhishek. By the age of four, he was already trying to swing his father’s bat, prompting his father to gift him a plastic bat to nurture his budding interest.
As a child, Abhishek practiced diligently, often asking his mother and sisters to bowl to him. It was during these formative years that he decided to pursue cricket as a career. Although his father never played for India, he was determined that his son would don the national jersey. Abhishek embraced this dream as his life’s mission.
At just 16, while representing Punjab, he made waves in the Under-16 circuit by scoring 1,200 runs and taking 57 wickets in a single season, earning him the BCCI’s ‘Naman Award’. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in 2017 and was part of the team that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2018.
A turning point in Abhishek’s career came when he came under the mentorship of former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Under Yuvraj’s guidance, his game flourished. In the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), Abhishek garnered attention for his explosive batting, amassing 484 runs at an impressive strike rate of 204. This season also marked his first call-up to the Indian national team.
In just his second match for India, he scored a blistering century against Zimbabwe, showcasing his talent on a global stage. To date, Abhishek has played 56 T20 International matches, scoring 1,629 runs at a strike rate of 187. He holds the record for the second-fastest half-century in T20 internationals for India, having reached the milestone in just 14 balls against New Zealand. Additionally, he holds the record for the fastest 100 sixes in T20 cricket.
