Abhay and Velavan Shine at National Doubles Squash Championship

Chennai, May 14: Defending champions Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar made a strong start in the men’s doubles event of the third National Doubles Squash Championship. They secured their place in the semifinals with a commanding victory in straight games at the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai on Thursday.

The top-seeded pair defeated Shubham and Vedant Patel in the quarterfinals with scores of 11-4, 11-2.

Abhay also continued his journey in the mixed doubles category. Due to the absence of his regular partner Anahat Singh, he teamed up with Radhika Seelan. The second-seeded duo faced a tough challenge from Ravi Dixit and Janet Vidhi but managed to clinch a hard-fought victory with scores of 10-12, 11-8, 11-9 to reach the semifinals.

The match was thrilling. After losing the first game, Abhay and Radhika made a remarkable comeback. Their patience during the crucial moments of the second and third games was key to their success.

The men’s doubles quarterfinals showcased impressive performances as well. Ravi Dixit and Vikas Mehra triumphed in a close match against Matthew Godwin and Navneet Prabhu with scores of 11-7, 10-12, 11-7. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu pair of Guhan Senthilkumar and Sandesh P.R. maintained their momentum by defeating Harendra Sandhu and Om Semwal with scores of 11-7, 2-11, 11-8.

Second-seeded Rahul Baitha and Suraj Chand easily advanced to the semifinals by defeating Dinesh R. and Maiyappan L. with scores of 11-6, 11-6. In the women’s doubles event, the experienced top-seeded duo of Joshna Chinappa and Radhika Seelan began their campaign with a strong win, beating Sahana Kalaivanan and Sangamithra Shanmugam with scores of 11-2, 11-7. In another match of Group A, Ananya Narayan and Anika Dubey also secured a remarkable victory against the same opponents with scores of 11-2, 11-1.

In the mixed doubles event, the top-seeded pair of Velavan Senthilkumar and Joshna Chinappa had a powerful start. They secured their semifinal spot by defeating Roshan Rajkumar and Sahana Kalaivanan with scores of 11-4, 11-5.

Suraj Chand and Nirupama Dubey also advanced after a tough match against Navneet Prabhu and Pooja Aarti, winning with scores of 11-9, 12-10. Meanwhile, Rahul Baitha and Anika Dubey made a strong comeback to defeat Sandesh P.R. and Shameena Riaz with scores of 10-12, 11-6, 11-8.

Earlier on Wednesday, Guhan Senthilkumar and Sandesh P.R. made a remarkable entry into the men’s doubles quarterfinals, defeating Naman Surana and Pranav Agarwal in a one-sided match with scores of 11-1, 11-2. Ravi Dixit and Janet Vidhi also advanced in mixed doubles, overcoming Dinesh R. and Ananya Narayan with scores of 4-11, 11-5, 11-8.
