AB de Villiers Anticipates 2027 World Cup Will Inspire a New Generation of Cricketers
AB de Villiers believes the 2027 World Cup will motivate young cricketers in South Africa, recalling its impact on his own career.

New Delhi, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Former South African captain AB de Villiers expressed his hope that the upcoming 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup will inspire a new generation of cricketers in South Africa. Reflecting on his own journey, he recalled how the 2003 World Cup shaped his aspirations at just 19 years old. South Africa is set to co-host this major event with Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 2 to November 21, 2027.
In a special chat with FanCode, the official broadcaster for the World Championship of Legends, de Villiers noted, “The 2027 World Cup marks the return of the tournament to South Africa for the first time since 2003. That World Cup played a significant role in my career and had a profound impact on me. I vividly remember an Australian conducting a cricket clinic at the University of Pretoria. It was there, at 19, that I played cricket and got to know Adam Gilchrist better. He worked with me on my wicketkeeping skills.”
He reminisced about a memorable moment with Gilchrist, who, unaware of de Villiers’ identity, encouraged him, saying, “All the best, youngster.” Just three years later, de Villiers faced Gilchrist in both Test and ODI formats, an experience that left a lasting impression on him. He is confident that the 2027 World Cup will have a similar effect on South African youth aspiring to represent their country.
De Villiers also highlighted the economic benefits of hosting the World Cup in South Africa, alongside Namibia and Zimbabwe. He expressed excitement about welcoming visitors to enjoy the country’s beautiful regions and showcase South Africa’s hospitality. “I’m looking forward to supporting South Africa at home. I believe the cricket will be fantastic, just like it was in 2003, and I hope the Proteas perform even better this time,” he said.
While reflecting on the 2003 tournament, de Villiers admitted that it doesn’t bring back fond memories in terms of performance. However, he noted that the current team appears strong and has a good chemistry. He praised the team culture and their recent success against Australia, winning their sixth consecutive ODI series against them. As the World Cup approaches, he advised the Proteas to stay focused on their goals amidst the hype and media attention.
Turning his attention to India, de Villiers emphasized the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) crucial role in developing a remarkable pipeline of talent. “Young Indian players are emerging, and the IPL serves as an outstanding platform. It has laid the foundation for immense talent in Indian cricket,” he stated.
He remarked on the depth of talent available to the Indian selectors, noting, “There are so many names that it’s hard to count. They clearly have a strong spin department, which will be interesting to see in their selections.” With several promising spinners and batsmen available, de Villiers acknowledged the challenge selectors face in choosing the right squad.
Among the rising stars, he highlighted young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has made a mark since his debut against England in July. De Villiers praised Suryavanshi’s aggressive play and encouraged him to continuously develop his game across all formats and conditions.
“Watching him is truly fantastic. I’m not surprised by his success. He needs to find a blueprint for different formats and conditions, understanding that each game presents unique challenges,” de Villiers advised.
He concluded with encouragement for Suryavanshi to respect each match’s circumstances and decisions, emphasizing the importance of adaptability as he progresses in his career. “He has all the talent in the world, and I look forward to seeing him grow in the sport,” de Villiers said.
