Tokyo : Japan was struck by an earthquake on Friday. The intensity of the earthquake was recorded at 8.5 on the Richter Scale. Preliminary information said that one person died and several images were damaged.
The United States Geological Survey stated that tremors were felt in an area spreading over 8.7 kilometers, at 2.42 pm. The epicentre was at 37.540 degrees north and 137.305 degrees east. Strong tremors were felt at Ishikawa prefecture on the Japanese island of Honshu. The buildings near the seashore were shaken.
The intensity was earlier recorded at 6.3 and later at 6.5. The intensity at Honshu was recorded at 6.2. Tremors were felt also in Suzu City, where minor damage has been reported. Rescue operations are in progress.
