Naba Barsho or the Bengali New Year is celebrated on the first day of the month of Baisakh, also known as Poila Baisakh. Throughout West Bengal, markets and shops wore a festive look, decorated beautifully with garlands of mango leaves, pith and marigold flowers. In all parts of the state the New Year was ushered in with songs, dances, regional games and kite-flying. People exchanged homemade Bengali sweets with neighbours and adorned the front gates of their houses with Rangoli (beautiful patterns and designs on floors, filled with colours and flowers). Fairs of various types were also organised all over the state. BM SSP
