Brajogopal Goali (21), the son of a Trinamool Congress gram panchayat member Samar Goali was arrested on Sunday for the gang-rape of the minor that led to her death on April 5 in Hanskhali block. According to an FIR lodged on Saturday by the victim’s father, the Class IX student had gone to attend Braagopal’s birthday party in Hanskhali’s Gajna village on Monday, April 4. The girl returned home in the early hours of Tuesday, feeling severely ill and bleeding profusely, her family said. It is believed that she was forced to drink alcohol and then raped by the accused and his friends. The minor’s father said she was dropped home by a woman and some dentified men. He added that they were threatened not to take the child to any government hospital or report the matter to the police. The girl’s father took her to a local doctor but she died in the afternoon. The victim was cremated in haste on the same day at a local crematorium, allegedly at the insistence of the Goalis. One report says that the body was burned after pouring kerosene to erase all evidence. A worker of the crematorium where the body was cremated has remained untraced since the incident. The victim’s family was afraid of approaching police because of Samar Goali’s influence and connections. Finally, the family was able to lodge a complaint with the help of the Nadia district Childline. BM SSP
