By Mir Afroz Zaman Dhaka, Apr 11 : As the number of coronavirus cases have fallen, Bangladesh’s ruling party Awami League has started reforming the party. The leaders of the party are desperate to overcome the organizational stagnation of the last two years.
The party has been working to strengthen its grassroots by visiting districts and upazilas. They held conferences and meetings in several districts. According to the Awami League leaders, by touring the grassroots they want to convene a full committee by convening expired branches in a short period of time. They also believe that the conference will be held in time and the Awami League will get a new leadership. However, the grassroots are against the formation of a committee by holding a conference, an extended meeting or a gathering somewhere from the center in a hurry. They say, “These are not conferences. The district president-general secretary and central leaders are getting predominance in the leadership election.
The opinion of the grassroots workers are not being taken..The team is getting weaker and weaker. ‘ Meanwhile, the issue of change of leadership is coming up on the table though Sheikh Hasina has been the president of Awami League for a long time. She has repeatedly called on the leaders and workers to select new leaders. However, in the last two conferences, she has taken the responsibility again in the face of the demands of the leaders and workers. There is also a discussion about the post of general secretary as Obaidul Quader has been performing his duties for two terms.
The Awami League has no precedent of having a general secretary three times in a row. Besides, Quader’s physical condition has been bad. Several names have come up in the discussions of the leaders and workers. They are presidium members Kazi Zafar Ullah, Abdur Razzak, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman. The names of Mahbubul Alam Hanif, who has been the joint general secretary for three consecutive terms and acting general secretary several times, have also come up. Joint General Secretary. Dipu Moni, agriculturist AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Hasan Mahmud have also been in the talks to become general secretary. However, the Awami League usually nominates a new president and general secretary in the council. The Awami League has a total of 78 organising district committees including 64 district and 12 city corporations. There are 622 upazila committees, 5,643 on committees and 43,597 ward committees under these districts.
