Heavy Rains

Mexico City, October 14 (Daily Kiran): At least 64 people have lost their lives and 65 others remain missing following days of torrential rains, floods, and landslides across several states in Mexico. The federal government released the latest figures on Monday morning, warning that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

Heavy Rains

At a morning press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, National Civil Protection Chief Laura Velázquez confirmed that fatalities occurred across four states severely affected by extreme rainfall between October 6 and 9.

According to the Mexico News Daily, Veracruz has been hit the hardest, recording 29 deaths and 18 missing persons. In Hidalgo, 21 people were confirmed dead and 43 remain missing, while Puebla reported 13 deaths and four missing persons. In Querétaro, a landslide claimed two lives, including a six-year-old boy.

The heavy rains triggered flooding and landslides in multiple municipalities across Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí, causing widespread destruction.

Federal Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation Minister Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina said that 132 sections of federal highways were blocked by floods and landslides, though all but two have since been cleared.

Meanwhile, Federal Electricity Commission Director Emilia Esther Calleja Alor reported that around 263,000 electricity users were affected by outages in the disaster-hit states. As of 6 a.m. Monday, power had been restored to 84% of the affected customers.

Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla confirmed that 7,347 members of the Mexican Army and National Guard have been deployed across the affected regions to support rescue and relief efforts.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as recovery operations intensify in flood-hit areas.
