49ers Defeat Commanders 23-17, Offense Struggles in Second Half
The San Francisco 49ers edged the Washington Commanders 23-17, improving to 6-0, but struggled offensively in the second half after losing Mike Evans to injury.

The San Francisco 49ers secured a 23-17 victory against the Washington Commanders, maintaining their undefeated record at 6-0. The win was marred by a drop in offensive performance during the second half after wide receiver Mike Evans injured his Achilles.
San Francisco raced to a 20-3 lead at halftime, demonstrating their offensive efficiency. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 19 of 25 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown. However, the team managed only three points and three first downs after the break. Purdy expressed frustration about the second half, stating, “I’m honestly a little upset with how I finished the game… It’s on me for us to execute better.”
Evans played a critical role in the first half, making three catches for 94 yards before leaving the game. His absence left a void, as the remaining wide receivers struggled to match his production. Purdy had to rely on Brandin Cooks, Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing, and Malik Turner, who collectively recorded only two catches for 35 yards.
The 49ers’ run game continued to gain momentum, with Christian McCaffrey leading the charge. He had 117 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, reinforcing the team’s offensive capabilities given the wide receiver injuries. Head coach Kyle Shanahan noted the importance of the run game during this stretch.
While the 49ers’ defense held the Commanders to just three points in the first half, they allowed Washington to threaten late in the game. Quarterback Jayden Daniels of the Commanders threw for over 300 yards and kept the game competitive, but it was the 49ers’ defense that clinched the win.
Looking ahead to their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, the 49ers will need to adapt quickly, as they are likely to be without Evans and potentially other receivers. Tight end George Kittle acknowledged the challenges posed by injuries but expressed confidence in the team’s depth. “Our wide receivers are more than capable of running the plays Coach Shanahan calls for us,” Kittle said.
As the 49ers address their injury issues, they must ensure that their offensive strategies do not falter, especially against an elite rush defense in the Falcons. With the trade deadline approaching, speculation about potential roster moves to bolster the receiving corps may increase.
