25 pc candidates with criminal background in 5 election states

New Delhi, March 6 : The national and regional political parties have openly given tickets to candidates of criminal background during the current Vidhan Sabha elections, as well. Along with this, a large number of people getting tickets are crorepatis. This has been revealed in the report of Association for Democratic Reforms. ADR has released a joint report on all five states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, Manipur, in Assembly elections, 2022. Regarding this latest report released by National Election Watch, ADR Uttarakhand Election State Coordinator Manoj Dhyani told on Sunday that after analysing the affidavits of all 6944 candidates who contested in the assembly elections in these five states, the 113-page report has been prepared. He said after studying the affidavits of a total 6944 candidates, a complete analysis of 6874 nominees could be done. The affidavits of 70 candidates could not be analysed as their affidavits were found to be incomplete. He said the ADR has demanded action from the Election Commission against such candidates, whose affidavits were not clear. According to this report, out of 6874 candidates, 1916 have contested from national parties, 1421 from regional parties, 1829 from unrecognised parties and 1708 are independent candidates. Out of these, 1694 (25 per cent) candidates have criminal background, 1262 (18 per cent) have serious criminal offences to their name and 2836 candidates (41 per cent) are crorepati candidates. According to the report, the average assets of these contesting candidates have been Rs 3.27 crore. Dhyani said that out of 1927 candidates of national parties, a total of 1916 nominees were analysed, in which 657 were of criminal background, while 467 were of serious criminal background.
