12-hour shut down in Purulia

Purulia, Mar 15 : In protest against the murder of a councillor from the Jhalda town m cipality in West Bengal, the opposition Congress has called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh on Tuesday being observed in Bengal’s Purulia district. With the roads closed, vehicles were off the roads, shopkeepers shut their business establishments, even as scores of Congress activists marched through the streets demanding the arrest of the “real culprits’ ‘, official sources said. Ahead of forming the m cipal board, four times Congress Councillor Tapan Kandu was gunned down on Sunday evening while on a stroll with his wife, also a Congress Councillor from the Jhalda m cipality. The Congress has won five of 12 wards at Jhalda. Trinamool has five councillors and the remaining two are Independents. The West Bengal Police have arrested two suspects- Dipak Kandu, the deceased nephew and his father in the murder case. Murdered Congress councillor’s wife, Purnima, has alleged that the officer-in-charge of the Jhalda police station had exerted pressure on her husband to join the Trinamool Congress. ”The officer of the local police station had been pressuring my husband to join Trinamool Congress since the results were announced for a hung m cipality, ” Purnima alleged. Meanwhile, the North 24 Parganas district police have arrested three more suspects in the murder of TMC Councillor at Panihati Anupam Dutta, also on Sunday evening. The prime suspect, Amit Pandit was arrested on Sunday night from nearby the scene of crime where he was hiding in a bush after committing the crime. Three other suspects in Dutta’s murder case were arrested from Baruipur in South 24 Parganas for supplying arms and amm tion to the main suspect. PC RN
