Zimbabwe Welcomes Back Taylor and Cremer for ODI Series Against Australia

Zimbabwes ODI series against Australia marks a significant test ahead of the 2027 World Cup, featuring the return of key players.

Harare, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Zimbabwe is gearing up for an important ODI series against Australia, viewing it as a key test in preparation for the 2027 World Cup. Sikandar Raza has been appointed as the captain of a 15-member squad, stepping in for regular skipper Richard Ngarava, who is recovering from a lower back injury.

The teams will face off at Harare Sports Club on September 15, 18, and 20. This series provides Zimbabwe with a chance to evaluate its emerging talent against one of the giants of world cricket. A notable highlight is the return of experienced players Brendan Taylor and Greame Cremer.

Brendan Taylor, 40, makes his return to the ODI team after a four-year hiatus, having played two matches against Sri Lanka in 2025. As Zimbabwe’s second-highest run-scorer in ODIs, he trails only Andy Flower by 81 runs in the all-time list for the country.

Meanwhile, former captain Greame Cremer will play his first ODI since 2018, having previously participated in the T20 format, including the T20 World Cup earlier this year. His last ODI appearance was during the 2011 World Cup against Australia.

Despite the boost from Taylor and Cremer’s return, Zimbabwe will miss several established players. Alongside Ngarava, Tendai Chatara is unavailable due to an Achilles tendon injury, as is Tanaka Chivanga. Wicketkeeper-batsman Clive Madande, who played in the recent ODI series against Bangladesh in July, has also been left out.

Tadivanashe Marumani will provide another option behind the stumps, while Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, and Innocent Kaia are among the primary batting options alongside Taylor, Raza, and Craig Ervine. The bowling attack will be led by Blessing Muzarabani, supported by Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri, and Ernest Masuku in pace roles. Cremer and Wellington Masakadza will handle spin duties, with Ryan Burl and Wesley Madhevere contributing as all-rounders.

This series holds historical significance for Zimbabwe, as it marks the first time since 2014 that Australia has played an ODI in the country, which occurred during a triangular series.

Zimbabwe Squad: Sikandar Raza (Captain), Ben Curran, Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Brendan Taylor, Brian Bennett, Craig Ervine, Ernest Masuku, Greame Cremer, Innocent Kaia, Newman Nyamhuri, Ryan Burl, Tadivanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Wesley Madhevere.
