New Delhi, March 26: Rishabh Pant, captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), spent time with cricket legend Yuvraj Singh before the start of IPL 2026. They worked on addressing Pant’s game deficiencies. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan stated that Yuvraj’s primary focus was on enhancing Pant’s mental resilience rather than just his technical skills.
Pathan shared insights on his YouTube channel, saying, “Yuvraj emphasized strengthening Rishabh’s mental toughness through extensive discussions rather than concentrating solely on his batting technique. He also stressed that a wicketkeeper-batsman like Pant should bat at number three to maximize his impact during the powerplay.”
He added, “It is crucial for Rishabh Pant to have the opportunity to bat during the powerplay. Nicholas Pooran has batted at number three for him, but Pant’s position should be secured there to allow him to capitalize on the powerplay. After working with Yuvraj Singh, I spoke with him, and he confirmed that the focus was more on Rishabh’s mental aspects than technical ones. The session lasted 3-4 hours and was primarily for discussion.”
Pathan noted, “Rishabh Pant will have significant responsibilities this season. We need to see how he performs to help the team qualify. From what I’ve observed, he appears fitter and more focused. He spent 4-5 days with Yuvraj Singh, and now we will see how he applies those lessons on the field. Last year, he often seemed under pressure and did not appear to enjoy the game. He should embrace the joy of cricket.”
Pant was acquired by LSG for a staggering ₹27 crores during the IPL 2025 mega auction, making him the most expensive player in the league’s history. However, his performance as both captain and batsman was lackluster. In IPL 2025, Pant scored only 269 runs in 14 matches, including a single innings of 118 runs.
The IPL 2026 season is crucial for both Rishabh Pant’s IPL and international career. If he performs well as a batsman this season, he could strengthen his claim for a spot in the limited-overs format of the Indian team and secure his place in the next IPL season.
