Why Is Akali Dal So Eager to Ally with BJP? Raja Warring Questions

Chandigarh, August 10: Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring questioned Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Badal on Sunday about his party’s eagerness to form an electoral alliance with the BJP. Warring highlighted that this eagerness has led Badal to reverse his stance on sensitive issues like the delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies.

Warring reminded Badal that just three months ago, his party opposed the delimitation bill, labeling it against Punjab’s interests. He asked what had changed in those three months that made Badal see merit in a bill he previously condemned.

The reasons, Warring stated, are clear. Badal is desperately trying to attract the BJP to secure his political survival ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. He recalled that Badal had previously claimed he would not compromise Punjab’s interests before the parliamentary elections, yet now, in his quest for survival, he seems to have forgotten those very interests he vowed to protect in 2024. Warring accused Badal of revealing his political opportunism once again.

The state Congress president asserted that even if Akali Dal and BJP join forces for the elections, their chances of winning are slim. He emphasized that the people of Punjab have not forgotten the severe crimes and atrocities against farmers for which both parties are culpable. Warring concluded that their alliance would likely expose their opportunism rather than change their electoral fate.
