Guwahati, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Assam on Tuesday. Alongside him, four other ministers, including Rameshwar Teli, Ajanta Niyog, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro, also took their oaths. Let’s explore who Rameshwar Teli is, now a part of Sarma’s cabinet.
Senior BJP leader Rameshwar Teli secured victory from the Duliajan assembly seat, defeating Congress candidate Dhruva Gogoi. His win reinforces his stronghold in the region.
Previously, Teli represented the Dibrugarh seat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 2019. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he vacated this seat for former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. His recent appointment marks a significant return to the cabinet.
Born on August 14, 1970, Rameshwar Teli began his political journey with the All Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association. He first entered the assembly in 2001, winning the Duliajan seat and serving as an MLA until 2011.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Teli’s victory led to his appointment as a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. He was entrusted with responsibilities in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, as well as the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The Duliajan assembly seat is considered a BJP stronghold. Teli first won this seat in 2001 and again in 2006. His recent victory further cements his influence. Coming from a community of tea garden workers, Teli’s inclusion in the cabinet reflects the government’s commitment to the tea workers and marginalized communities in the state.
