Last Date for Vice Presidential Nomination is 21 August
The last date for filing nominations for the Vice Presidential election is 21 August. If the opposition also announces its candidate (which is highly likely), the election will be held on 9 September. The NDA has a clear majority in the electoral college (which includes members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha). In the case of voting, the ruling coalition’s candidate is expected to win.
The effective strength of the electoral college is 781, with the ruling NDA supported by at least 422 members. The party whip does not apply in the Vice Presidential election as voting is conducted by secret ballot. It is notable that this election is being held due to the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President for health reasons.
