Kolkata: The West Bengal government has submitted a list of eight senior IPS officers to the central government for the appointment of the next Director General of Police (DGP). This information was confirmed by government sources.
The list was sent to Delhi on January 21 and includes the name of acting DGP Rajeev Kumar, who is set to retire on January 31. Other officers named are Ranvir Kumar, Debashish Roy, Anuj Sharma, Jagmohan, N. Ramesh Babu, and Siddhinath Gupta.
According to procedure, the state government forwards a list of senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A UPSC committee then selects three names from this list and returns them to the state government for the final decision.
Sources revealed that Rajeev Kumar’s name was included for administrative reasons, as he was among the senior IPS officers in West Bengal Police when the last DGP, Manoj Malaviya, retired in December 2023. However, officials clarified that inclusion of his name does not guarantee reappointment.
Further, serious consideration is being given to Piyush Pandey, Rajesh Kumar, and Ranvir Kumar. Piyush Pandey is a former Special Protection Group officer and currently leads Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s security team. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain if the final selection will be from these three officers.
This is the second time the state has sent a list to the UPSC for the DGP post. The previous list, sent on December 27, 2023, was returned by the UPSC due to errors. As per rules, the list should have been sent at least three months before Malaviya’s retirement, by September 2023.
Meanwhile, IPS officer Rajesh Kumar filed a petition with the Central Administrative Tribunal claiming he was unfairly excluded from the list despite meeting all eligibility criteria.
Responding to the petition, the court directed the state government on January 23 to resubmit the list. The court also instructed the UPSC to convene a committee by January 28 to review the names. The commission is expected to forward three shortlisted candidates to the state by January 29, after which the state government will take the final decision.
