Kolkata, May 12: West Bengal’s newly appointed Food and Supply Minister, Ashok Kirtaniya, announced on Tuesday the removal of whole wheat flour from the state’s ration list. He asserted that the public distribution system (PDS) has been plagued by significant fraud and corruption, particularly in the supply of flour.
In a conversation, Minister Kirtaniya urged the public to give the new government a week to clarify its action plan. He stated, “The party (BJP) has entrusted us with a significant responsibility. They believe that the largest scams in Bengal have occurred in the food and education departments.”
Kirtaniya emphasized his commitment to uphold the party’s trust in him. “Enough is enough. No more scams will be tolerated,” he declared. He warned that anyone involved in corruption or scams, whether officials or mill owners, would not be spared.
The minister pointed out that the biggest scam currently in the food department revolves around flour. He has instructed relevant officials to remove wheat flour from the ration list. However, officials cautioned that this decision could lead to losses for the government, as a substantial amount of flour is already in stock.
In response, the minister clarified, “Only the flour that has already been processed will be distributed. After that, wheat flour will no longer be part of West Bengal’s ration.”
Meanwhile, another newly appointed minister, Dilip Ghosh, accused many leaders of the Trinamool Congress of being involved in corruption. This statement came a day after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested former minister Sujit Bose in a municipal recruitment corruption case.
Notably, last week, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister, alongside five other legislators who also assumed ministerial positions.
