Kolkata, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Merit Scholarship Scheme (SVMSS) on Saturday, marking a significant step toward empowering the state’s talented youth. Adhikari emphasized that this initiative is revolutionary in its approach to support meritorious students.
In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister stated that the launch of the SVMSS opens a new chapter for West Bengal‘s deserving youth. Through this initiative, qualified students gaining admission to premier institutions in India and worldwide will receive financial assistance for pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programs, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their dreams.
According to the QS World University Rankings, the SVMSS will provide 100% support for tuition fees and health insurance for students admitted to the top 100 universities globally. Additionally, students entering leading national institutions will be eligible for up to 100% of the approved tuition fees based on objective institutional criteria and rankings.
Adhikari reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that talent, merit, and ambition—not financial limitations—determine how far a young person can go. He stated, “From West Bengal to the world, we stand with our talented youth. The journey to a prosperous West Bengal begins with empowering our young people.”
The Chief Minister also expressed his government’s dedication to transforming the state’s education system in line with Swami Vivekananda’s vision of education. This vision emphasizes character building, mental strength, and self-reliance over mere exam-focused learning.
While addressing the ‘Vidyasagar Education Awards 2026’ ceremony, jointly organized by the state’s school and higher education departments, Adhikari noted that in recent years, Swami Vivekananda’s teachings have been gradually removed from the education system, weakening its core values.
He quoted Swami Vivekananda, stating that true education instills self-belief and empowers individuals to stand on their own feet. He highlighted the need to revive the spirit of these teachings alongside adopting technology in modern education, as the education system in West Bengal has faced disruptions due to the diminishing presence of these fundamental principles.
