Kolkata, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal Health Department is contemplating disciplinary action against government doctors linked to state medical institutions. This follows allegations that these doctors participated in health camps named ‘Sebashray,’ organized by TMC’s national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, without obtaining prior approval from relevant authorities.
Sources within the health department revealed that a four-member inquiry committee has begun questioning the doctors who attended the camps without the necessary senior approval. The committee aims to determine the appropriateness of the doctors’ responses to decide whether disciplinary measures should be initiated and what form those measures might take.
The inquiry committee is investigating whether the doctors sought permission from their reporting managers to attend the health camps, and if so, which doctors granted that permission. In such cases, the committee is expected to directly verify claims with the relevant reporting officials to ascertain the truth.
A health department official noted a serious allegation that medical interns and even final-year medical students from various state medical colleges were coerced into participating in the ‘Sebashray’ health camps and caring for patients. Additionally, there are claims that advanced medical equipment, including ultrasound machines, were taken from state-run medical colleges to the camps without authorization.
The inquiry committee may also question medical interns and students about whether their participation in the ‘Sebashray’ health camps was voluntary or under pressure from senior officials or political figures.
However, a health department official indicated that the committee is unlikely to recommend severe actions against the interns and students, considering their future professional careers. He stated, “They may be spared, but a stern warning will certainly be issued.”
