Kolkata, May 24: West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi has ordered a departmental inquiry against Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr. Avik Dey. His name surfaced in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a junior female doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, as well as financial irregularities linked to the institution.
Dr. Dey, considered close to former principal Sandeep Ghosh, was previously arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for financial misconduct related to the medical college.
Recently, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the reopening of files related to the RG Kar case. Three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers—former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta, and Indira Mukherjee—were suspended after allegations of lapses in the initial investigation conducted by Kolkata Police, prior to the case being handed over to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
The Chief Minister clarified that the new investigation into the RG Kar case will run parallel to the ongoing CBI inquiry.
Following the state administration’s decision to reopen the RG Kar case files, the Governor ordered a departmental inquiry against Dr. Avik Dey on Saturday.
Coincidentally, departmental action is also being taken against the three suspended IPS officers, as per the Chief Minister’s announcement.
Reports indicate that multiple allegations have emerged against Dr. Dey, including creating a threatening atmosphere in various medical institutions across the state through his close associates and illegally obtaining postgraduate training under the service quota.
Currently, Dr. Dey is serving as a radiologist at Bardhaman Medical College in East Bardhaman district.
During the RG Kar controversy, he was implicated in allegations of fostering a threatening environment in various medical colleges statewide. He has also been accused of arriving at the crime scene in the rape and murder case, despite having no official role there. Questions have been raised regarding the timing and reasons for his presence at the site shortly after the victim’s body was discovered.
