West Bengal Government to Audit Hotels Following Kolkata Fire Incident

Kolkata, August 19: The West Bengal government has decided to conduct an audit of all hotels and lodges in Kolkata following a recent fire incident. State Fire Services Minister Kaushik Choudhury announced this decision on Wednesday.

Minister Choudhury stated that he had a detailed discussion with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari regarding the matter. It was agreed that a comprehensive audit of all hotels, lodges, and guest houses would be carried out. He emphasized, “We are adopting a zero-tolerance policy in this matter. Any institution violating regulations will not be spared.”

Speaking to reporters, Choudhury expressed his astonishment at how these hotels received trade licenses during previous administrations. He noted that the state fire service department has a significant station located on Mirza Ghalib Street, very close to the hotel where the fire broke out this morning. Each floor of that building houses a different hotel or guest house, and the pathways are so narrow that two people cannot walk or stand side by side. There are no external stairs for emergency exits.

He reported that nine people lost their lives in the incident. Officials and firefighters from his department rescued approximately 80 individuals, who were then transported to hospitals and rescue centers. Minister Choudhury confirmed that emergency responders arrived promptly, which helped save many lives.

He also mentioned that action would be taken regarding the hotel licenses, which will be investigated by the Kolkata police. Choudhury added, “The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. A forensic investigation is underway, and actions will be taken. Discussions are ongoing with the Chief Minister.”
