Kolkata, May 11: The West Bengal government has taken significant steps to curb cattle smuggling since coming to power. A state official has confirmed that strict directives have been issued to district police regarding this issue.
On the first day of the new administration, orders were given to enhance surveillance on cattle smuggling. Administrative circles have been clearly informed that cattle smuggling must be stopped at all costs.
Additionally, it has been emphasized that illegal cattle markets cannot be allowed to operate and must be monitored closely. Extra vigilance has been mandated to ensure that no illegal markets open.
The state police has received similar instructions. Following this, senior police officials have communicated these directives to district police units.
Notably, Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal was previously linked to a cattle smuggling case. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2022. Subsequently, his daughter was also implicated and arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Both father and daughter were held in Tihar Jail but later granted bail.
Meanwhile, three trucks filled with cattle have been seized in Malda district. These animals were allegedly being transported for smuggling.
Local villagers spotted the vehicles and intervened. Police and central forces later arrived at the scene. This incident occurred near the bus stand on National Highway 12 in Gajol Kadubari.
Local resident Mintu Saha told reporters that the state government had already announced that no trade involving cattle is permissible. Some individuals were reportedly buying cattle from various markets and transporting them in three trucks. One truck contained eight cattle, another five, and the third three.
Before coming to power, the BJP had promised to form a dedicated task force to monitor and prevent cattle smuggling in the state.
