Voter Turnout Hits 76% in Assams Nagaon By-Election Amidst Fierce Competition

Guwahati, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Voting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election concluded peacefully on Monday at 5 PM, with approximately 76% of the 1.9 million registered voters casting their ballots. Election officials expect this percentage to rise, as polling staff allowed those who arrived before the deadline to vote.

Polling began at 7 AM in the constituency, which encompasses eight assembly segments. This by-election was necessitated by the resignation of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who later contested and won a seat in the Assam Assembly from Dispur on a BJP ticket.

Fifteen candidates are in the fray, with a significant contest between BJP’s Devashish Sharma, Congress’s Sibamani Bora, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. While voting was largely peaceful, opposition parties alleged irregularities at some polling stations.

Congress leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain claimed that unidentified individuals entered several polling centers in the Samaguri assembly segment, accusing the BJP of attempting to influence the voting process. However, these allegations have not been independently verified. Election officials maintained security across the constituency to ensure a smooth voting process.

The political contest has attracted considerable attention due to the presence of major candidates from BJP, Congress, and AIUDF. Voter turnout remained high despite the allegations, underscoring the significance of the Nagaon by-election as it may reflect the political mood in one of Assam’s key parliamentary regions.

Vote counting is scheduled for October 9, when the fate of all 15 candidates will be determined. This by-election has gained further importance amid significant political developments in Assam, as BJP, Congress, and AIUDF strive to strengthen their respective support bases.

The need for this by-election arose after Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha on March 20, 2026, to join the BJP. He subsequently won a seat in the Assam Assembly, leaving the Nagaon constituency vacant. This seat has been a stronghold for Congress since 2019, making the current contest a crucial test for the party to retain control despite Bordoloi’s departure and Ajmal’s entry into the race.
