Mumbai, February 27: Sangeeta Sornalingam, wife of Tamil cinema superstar Vijay and leader of the Tamilga Vetrikazhagam (TVK), has filed for divorce in Chengalpattu Family Court.
In her petition, Sangeeta alleges that Vijay was involved in an extramarital affair with an actress. When this relationship came to light in April 2021, Vijay assured her that he would end it. However, the affair continued, causing her significant mental distress.
According to the court filing, Sangeeta noticed a change in Vijay’s behavior when she confronted him about the alleged relationship. She claims that he restricted her domestic rights, limited her movements, and imposed various financial restrictions.
In her petition, Sangeeta cites mental harassment and cruelty as grounds for the divorce. She has filed under the Special Marriage Act of 1954, which allows for divorce on the basis of adultery and cruelty, according to legal experts.
Vijay and Sangeeta were married on August 25, 1999. Vijay is Christian, while Sangeeta is Hindu, and they had a lavish reception in Chennai following their marriage. The couple welcomed their first child, Jason Sanjay, in 2000, and their daughter, Divya Sasha, was born in 2005.
After 27 years of marriage, Sangeeta has now sought a divorce. The couple has been living separately for the past two years.
Sangeeta hails from a Sri Lankan Tamil family and was raised in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Vijay, known to his fans as Thalapathi, has shifted his focus from films to an active role in politics in recent years. His party, Tamilga Vetrikazhagam, is seen as an emerging political force in Tamil Nadu.
