Chennai, May 9: Amid ongoing political turmoil regarding government formation in Tamil Nadu, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has demanded a significant share in power in exchange for supporting the Tamilaga Vetrri Katchi (TVK). Sources indicate that VCK is seeking the Deputy Chief Minister position along with several key responsibilities in the next government.
According to party sources, VCK, led by Thol Thirumavalavan, held a high-level virtual meeting on Friday to discuss power-sharing arrangements. The meeting focused on the party’s role in the potential TVK-led government and the terms of their support.
Reports suggest that VCK has specifically requested the Deputy CM position for Thirumavalavan. Additionally, the party is seeking cabinet positions for its two newly elected legislators. In the assembly elections held on April 23, VCK secured two seats, making it a crucial player in the ongoing government formation efforts.
Political circles are also buzzing with speculation that Thirumavalavan may contest a by-election for the Tiruchirappalli East seat if it becomes vacant. TVK leader Vijay won two seats in the assembly elections and is expected to retain the Perambur seat in Chennai, which could lead to a by-election in Tiruchirappalli East.
Furthermore, VCK has outlined several policy demands alongside its call for power-sharing. These include the continuation of commissions established by the previous government to investigate caste-based murders and the implementation of reservation for Dalits in promotions within government jobs.
The situation regarding government formation in Tamil Nadu remains unclear. The TVK emerged as the largest party in the 234-member assembly with 108 seats but requires allies to reach a majority.
VCK has also stated that the party receiving the public mandate should be given the opportunity to form the government. The party opposes any possibility of imposing President’s Rule in the state.
Meanwhile, on Friday night, Thirumavalavan met with outgoing Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin, intensifying speculation about VCK’s final stance and the evolving political dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
