Varanasi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Urban Development and Energy Minister AK Sharma convened a review meeting in Varanasi on September 13, focusing on flooding and urban management. The meeting included discussions on cleanliness, drainage systems, electricity supply, and challenges posed by monsoon rains. Prior to the meeting, the minister conducted field visits to assess the cleanliness and flooding situations in various areas.
Sharma noted that while most neighborhoods have satisfactory cleanliness and drainage systems, some areas continue to face recurrent flooding issues. He directed officials to identify these problematic locations.
The minister emphasized that simply draining water during the rainy season is not a long-term solution. For areas that traditionally experience flooding, engineering-based solutions must be implemented. He assured that necessary funding would be allocated to permanently resolve these issues, aiming to free Varanasi from flooding troubles.
In response to recent videos showing plastic bags obstructing drainage systems, Sharma expressed his displeasure. He mentioned having seen footage of large drains filled with new plastic bags, which had been stuffed with stones and dumped into the drains.
Sharma accused individuals of deliberately trying to block the flow of drains, stating that such actions lead to flooding and cause inconvenience to residents. He condemned these actions as detrimental to the image of Varanasi and the state, suggesting political motives behind them.
According to Sharma, the municipal corporation has filed FIRs against unidentified individuals involved in this obstruction. The police are now investigating to identify those responsible for blocking the drains.
He reiterated that Varanasi, a historic and religious city attracting visitors from around the world, must prioritize cleanliness and efficient drainage. While natural rainfall can challenge drainage systems, intentional obstruction will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
