Vaiko Accuses Centre of Betraying Tamil Nadu in 2026-27 Budget

Chennai, February 2: MDMK General Secretary Vaiko strongly criticized the 2026-27 central budget on Monday, accusing the government of betraying Tamil Nadu at a crucial political moment as the state assembly elections approach. He expressed deep disappointment over the budget’s failure to allocate significant financial assistance or announce important projects for Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to journalists in Coimbatore, Vaiko said there were high expectations that the budget would support Tamil Nadu especially with elections nearing. However, these hopes were completely dashed as no substantial provisions were made for the state.

Vaiko also targeted the government over fuel prices, pointing out that despite crude oil prices hovering around 50 dollars per barrel, petrol and diesel rates were not reduced. He argued this has placed an extra financial burden on ordinary citizens already struggling with rising inflation.

He accused the government of ignoring public welfare by not passing on the benefits of lower crude oil costs to consumers.

Questioning major economic assumptions in the budget, Vaiko highlighted that the government’s announcement to borrow Rs 11 lakh crore makes the target of seven percent economic growth unrealistic. He said, “You cannot talk of strong growth while increasing debt at such a huge scale and the budget’s estimates are divorced from economic reality.”

Vaiko further alleged that key infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu were neglected. He claimed the metro rail project did not receive adequate funding, reinforcing his charge of Tamil Nadu being sidelined in resource allocation.

He described the budget as another example of the government’s neglect of the state. Responding to political questions, Vaiko said this was not the time to discuss seat-sharing or power-sharing arrangements.

Looking ahead to the assembly elections, Vaiko announced that MDMK will actively campaign across Tamil Nadu to expose the central government’s failures and the injustice done to the state through the budget.
