New Delhi: The US military has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic, which was found to have three Indian crew members among its 28 personnel, according to media reports.
The vessel, named Marinera and formerly known as Bella 1, was captured following an extensive maritime search operation that began in the Caribbean Sea and extended to the North Atlantic. The tanker’s crew was multinational, comprising 17 Ukrainians, six Georgians, three Indians, and two Russians, including the ship’s captain. All crew members are currently in US custody, although authorities have not disclosed details regarding their release or the conditions thereof.
Coordinated Operation and International Support
The seizure took place on Wednesday as part of a coordinated operation involving US agencies with support from the British military. US officials allege that the tanker had connections to Venezuela and was potentially involved in efforts to circumvent international sanctions.
The operation was carried out jointly by the US Coast Guard and military units, with assistance from the United Kingdom. British airbases were used to support the mission, while Royal Air Force surveillance aircraft monitored the tanker as it traversed waters between Iceland and the UK.
Russian Response and Diplomatic Tensions
Russia has strongly condemned the seizure, calling it a violation of international maritime law. The Russian Ministry of Transport issued a statement asserting that no country has the right to use force against ships legally registered under another nation’s flag.
Russian lawmakers also reacted sharply. Alexei Zhuravlev, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defence Committee, described the seizure as an act of maritime piracy and a direct challenge to Russian sovereignty. He stated, “This is the most common form of maritime piracy – a ship seized by an armed American fleet.” Zhuravlev further claimed such actions are tantamount to attacks on Russian territory, given the tanker’s Russian flag.
Geopolitical Implications and Ongoing Developments
The detention of the Marinera has highlighted the escalating conflict surrounding the enforcement of sanctions, maritime security, and the global energy trade. As investigations continue and official responses are awaited, the incident is being closely monitored for its broader geopolitical consequences.
