
Fullerton, June 27: Thailand Masters champion Devika Sihag has secured her spot in the semifinals of the US Open by defeating Japan’s third seed, Riko Gunji. Meanwhile, Raunak Chauhan continues his impressive performance, also reaching the semifinals of the competition.
Devika triumphed over Gunji in the women’s singles quarterfinals with scores of 22-20, 21-19.
In another match, Chauhan defeated Israel’s Misha Zilberman in just 38 minutes, winning 23-21, 21-11, to clinch his place in the men’s singles BWF World Tour Super 300 semifinals. He will face eighth seed Su Li Yang from Chinese Taipei in the semifinals.
Former world number one Kidambi Srikanth also advanced by overcoming Chinese Taipei’s Liao Chuo-Fu with scores of 21-9, 12-21, 21-8. In the semifinals, Srikanth will compete against Japan’s fourth seed Yudai Okimoto.
Devika will face second seed Line Christophersen in her semifinal match. Christophersen defeated India’s Tanvi Sharma in the quarterfinals with scores of 21-16, 11-21, 21-11.
In another quarterfinal, Rakshita lost to Canada’s Rachel Chan with scores of 15-21, 21-16, 21-12.
Earlier on Wednesday, World Junior Championship silver medalist Tanvi Sharma and Devika began their US Open campaign with dominant victories. Tanvi defeated Germany’s Yvonne Li 23-21, 21-16, while Devika won her first-round match against Peru’s Ines Lucia Castillo 21-14, 21-14.
In two all-Indian matchups, rising star Raunak Chauhan defeated former World Junior silver medalist S Shankar Muthusamy 23-21, 21-16. Fifth seed Kidambi Srikanth also advanced by beating fellow Indian D Sanith in just 30 minutes with scores of 21-14, 21-12. Additionally, Rakshita progressed in women’s singles alongside mixed doubles pair Dhruv Rawat and K Manisha.
Rakshita defeated Czech Republic’s Tereza Swabikova with scores of 21-15, 21-8. The seventh-seeded mixed doubles team of Rawat and Manisha took only 26 minutes to defeat Indonesia’s Viravan Ihsan Adam and Serena Kani, winning 21-15, 21-16.
