UPI Transactions Surge by 25% in April, Crossing 22 Billion Mark

New Delhi, May 1: The number of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions surged by 25% year-on-year in April, surpassing 22.35 billion. The total transaction value also increased by 21% to over ₹29.03 lakh crore, according to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

On a daily basis, the average number of UPI transactions rose to 74.5 crore in April, up from 73 crore in March. The average daily transaction value climbed to ₹96,766 crore, compared to ₹95,243 crore the previous month.

In addition, the monthly transaction volume for the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) reached 36.2 crore in April, with a transaction value of ₹7.01 lakh crore, marking a 13% increase compared to the same period last year. The daily average transaction count stood at 1.2 crore, indicating robust growth.

March recorded the highest monthly UPI transactions since its launch in 2016, with 22.64 billion transactions.

UPI is now available in over eight countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, and Qatar, establishing India as a global leader in digital payments. The expanding international reach of UPI is driving remittances, promoting financial inclusion, and strengthening India’s position in the global fintech landscape.

According to the Finance Ministry, India’s leading digital payment platform has seen an extraordinary growth of nearly 12,000 times in transaction volume over the past decade.

Launched on April 11, 2016, under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI has become the backbone of India’s digital payment ecosystem. Starting from a modest 2 crore transactions in the fiscal year 2016-17, the platform processed over 24,162 crore transactions in the fiscal year 2025-26.

The growth in transaction value has been equally impressive. From ₹0.07 lakh crore in its first operational year, the transaction value skyrocketed to approximately ₹314 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2025-26, reflecting an increase of over 4,000 times.
